Your Reactions Are Not Who You Are

(Before you read on: if this speaks to you, I run a weekly session where we work through exactly this kind of pattern together. DM me to join.)

I used to think my quick temper was just who I was. Someone would say the wrong thing, and I would snap, then tell myself that’s just my personality. It took me years to see that reaction was not me. It was whatever I had not dealt with yet. This is where shadow work comes in, working with the parts of yourself you’ve spent years avoiding instead of just managing what shows up on the surface.

Most people are not actually responding to what is happening in front of them. They are responding through a pattern that formed a long time ago, often around something that has nothing to do with the present moment. Someone raises their voice a little and your whole body tightens. That tightness did not start today.

The 4 Stages of Conscious Response

1. Personality Consciousness

This is where most of us operate without knowing it. You are your body, your emotions, your desires, your mind. Whatever comes up, you become it instantly, no space between trigger and reaction.

2. Emotional Intelligence

You learn to recognize what you are feeling and manage it so you do not blow up. Useful, but incomplete. Managing an emotion is not the same as understanding where it came from, and this is also where I connect back to what I wrote about in Positive Thinking Cannot Erase Unconscious Emotions, positivity alone does not resolve what is unresolved underneath.

3. Observing Consciousness

You step back and notice the anger or fear as it happens instead of becoming it. That gap, even half a second, changes everything. You are not suppressing it, you are watching it.

4. Soul Consciousness

This is deeper still, where your response stops being performed and starts coming from real understanding. Quieter than it sounds. Less about staying calm, more about actually knowing yourself.

Shadow Work: Meeting What You’ve Avoided

None of this happens by force, and it does not happen by insight alone either. Reading about your patterns is not the same as releasing them. A few tools have helped me actually work through what sits underneath a reaction, not just understand it.

Shadow work has been the most direct of these, going toward the part of yourself you have spent years avoiding, the anger, the neediness, whatever got labeled unacceptable early and pushed out of sight. It does not disappear because you stopped looking. It runs the reaction from behind the scenes until you meet it. If you want a grounded overview of how this actually works in practice, Psychology Today’s overview on shadow work is a solid starting point.

Reiki works with the energy body directly. A lot of what we carry is not a memory we can talk through, it is stored in the body and needs to move through something other than analysis.

Cleansing practices, breathwork, specific pranayama, matter just as much. They are how the nervous system actually lets go, instead of getting better at hiding it.

Where to Start Today

You can start today by noticing which stage you are in the next time something sets you off. Not judging it, just noticing it.

Your reactions are not your identity. They are information about what still needs your attention.

If any of this resonates, DM me. I run shadow work sessions every week and would love to have you join.
